Aloha 1950 Event

Aloha 1950 Event

I wanted to do a write up on this weekends big event by The Rock n Roll Circus – ‘Aloha 1950’.

It was a fantastic night full of burlesque, cabaret, pineapples and coconuts! This is the second show I have been too by these guys and they really do a fantastic job creating a night full of exciting acts.

The event was held in The Winchester building which is a lovely art-deco building which was originally built for the Freemasons. It’s an amazing Auckland venue, and perfect for themed events with its historic interior design.

Miss Elvis

Aloha 1950 was a giant beach party with a vintage theme,  MC’d by none other than the talented, hilarious and ever so lovely Miss Elvis. She continuously does such a great job and her stage presence is next to none… I had the pleasure of watching her perform at the Miss Ink Auckland competition a couple of weeks back as well.

There was also a best dressed competition on the night which the lovely Natalie ‘The Pineapple Lady’ shared with another competitor, its always nice to see people get dressed up.

Lorelai Louise

One of my highlights of the entire evening was definitely watching Amourous Ava’s act which included an amazing ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ costume with glittery red lips and a great swim suit! Not only is this one of my favourite films of all time, but she did such a great job with her costume and it was SO funny to watch, I cant wait to see more of her! And don’t get me wrong everyone’s performance was outstanding.

I have added a few photos from the night below, photography by Peter Jennings.

A little info about my outfit on the night:

I had planned my outfit a month or so ago and knew I wanted to try making my first skirt. So I quickly ordered some fabric and got to work.

Head piece – I made my head piece from scratch! I already had the headband and flowers, so I added some fake grapes to the side for a fruity Hawaiian look. I got everything from Look Sharp for about $15 . I then hot glued everything on carefully in certain ways so that when it sat on my head, it looked right.

Top – This is the black Zooey top from Pinup Girl Clothing. Its really comfy and I love the cross straps at the back. It is a little lower in the bust than I prefer as I’m really particular about not showing any cleavage, so it was definitely a little more risqué for me.

Skirt – This skirt was made by me! Its the first swing skirt I’ve ever made. I brought the amazing fabric online from Voodoo Rabbit in Australia. They easily make some of the best fabric prints I have ever seen, I basically want every fabric they have. If you want to try making a skirt then definitely have a look at their site. One of my best friends got me into this company and we both hung out on a Sunday afternoon and did some sewing.

Shoes – These are the black leather ‘Malibu’ Windsor Smiths, I love them because they’re super high and super comfy! I love HIGH heels! I got them from Andrea Biani in Newmarket. I really wanted to give my plain black heels a little more ‘oomph’ and love the idea of shoe clips to quickly add a different look to any outfit. I purchased some Hawaiian looking flowers from the lovely Miss Rouge, and clasped them on the back of my ankle.

The Rock n Roll Circus have another great show coming up called ‘The Cats Meow’ – make sure you check them out and click ‘like’ on Facebook to stay in the loop with all their upcoming events.
