I got to chat with Jennie Skulander, the sassy lead woman of New Zealand rock and metal band Devilskin. She’s got some killer vocals, and an awesome rockabilly style. I love her, and I know you guys will too…
When did you first start listening to metal music and rock n’ roll?
Growing up my Dad was right into Heavy Metal… bands like Iron Maiden, Dio, and Judas Priest, and my Mum was into Elvis, Rod Stewart and Stray Cats so I started getting into these artists at a young age. When I hit my tweens/teens I was listening to bands like Tool, Deftones, and System of a down. These days I’m a lot more mellow.
I’ve seen you play with Devilskin 4 times live now… every time I see you, you seem to be even more badass… do you have any backstage rituals that you have to do to make sure your set is perfect?
I tend to do vocal warm ups while getting ready as well as a range of exercises and stretching. We used to all have a drink to unwind before going on but I really cut down on my alcohol these days
How do you come up with your stage outfits? Do you have someone who helps you piece them together?
I have ideas of what I want and put it together as well as I can. I also used to have Nails wife making outfits for me. I used to wear a lot of corsets because I put weight on and wanted to look smaller but these days I’m trying to phase the corsets out a bit and go a bit more edgy!
What’s your favourite piece of rockabilly clothing that you own?
Probably my new Studded Fake leather jacket I recently purchased in London, and also my Skull Bustier from Wheels and Dollbaby.
You’re known for you badass vocal chords, but do you have any other instruments you can play or would want to learn?
I took piano lessons for 4-5 years when I was younger and also learned guitar for 2 years. I can play basic ukulele too! If I was to learn an instrument now It probably would be the Harmonica.
You recently performed at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go on your US trip, which is a massive deal. What would the highlight of your musical career be so far?
Definitely the overseas trip playing in London and LA. We got to play to some amazing people including Jimi Hendrix’s daughter, the saxophonist of Pink Floyd, Lemmy Kilmister’s (Motorhead) son and Dave Mustain’s (Megadeth) son, Justice. We also made friends with Jeff Abercrombie, ex Bassist of Rock band Fuel who is a massive fan of ours. Also the success of our album and opening for bands like Motley Crue and Slash.
I love your whole look, what are you favourite beauty items at the moment?
I really like the Puff-off eye gel and Hoola Bronzer from Benefit. Also, a lime and coconut body scrub from Cocolove.
What is your absolute favourite sweet treat when you feel like scoffing something yummy?
Raw Snickers bar. Tastes like the real deal without all the bad stuff
What has been the biggest thing you think you have achieved with Devilskin so far?
I would say the success with our album ‘We Rise’. I never expected to hit number one on the chart after 1 week, go Gold after 2 weeks, go Platinum after 8 months and still remain on the chart after 59 weeks. The Album is also about to be released in the UK! It still amazes me every day how well it’s done and the fact we are an independent unsigned band!
What is one of your favourite films, and why?
Cry baby because the outfits are to die for!
Who would you say is your biggest inspiration?
Mike Patton (Faith no More) as he is super diverse vocally and super cool.
You must have a million future projects in the works, any clues about what you’re going to be up too next?
Apart from the ‘Mountains and the Moon Tour’ about to start, we are working on the 2nd album so plans to get in the studio for that next. Studio, being in London.
Thank you so much Jennie, I know you’re an incredibly busy woman so I really appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions. Good luck for your upcoming album, I’m really looking forward to hearing some fresh new Devilskin tracks… ‘Mountains’ is already one of my new favourite’s
