Pinup Girl Clothing Underskirt – A Must-Have

My Revolutionary Pinup Must-Have - Pinup girl clothing - Canvas Underskirt - Miss Charlotte Cake

You need the Pinup Girl Clothing Underskirt if you’re wanting some added volume but prefer to not wear petticoats.

Then that’s me pretty much every day when I get dressed for the office… While colour matching pretty coloured petticoats with cute outfits is so much fun, I’m just not a huge fan of wearing them every day.

Wearing a petticoat on the weekend, at a special event or on colder days? Heck yeah! But when I have a 9-5 office job where I’m sitting at my desk for most of the day, or its the middle of a muggy Auckland summer … I really don’t want to be swimming in a sea of extra, itchy fabric at my desk (there’s only so many areas that can be kept cool with office air conditioning).

Personally, I like volume and shape that a petticoat gives me without that full, puffy look a petticoat can give. So for all these reasons this post is about the Pinup Girl Clothing – Black Canvas Underskirt.

I finally purchased this item after what feels like forever. I had it in and out of my shopping cart for about a year before I finally gave in during the Black Friday sale. I feel like this item is really under-rated with how truly amazing it actually is.

The Fit

I’m usually a size medium in everything from PUG – sometimes a small in the top half depending on the style. I chose to stick with the medium size for this particular item (just be sure to read the sizing info online). The wide elastic band comes with two domes to snap it in place. My tummy still stays  flat in front too without that extra pooch that petticoats sometimes give.

Stick to your waist size if you’re wondering about fit – I’m a 28″ waist, and went with the medium which fits dreamily.

The two layers of canvas are stiff, but still soft on the skin and the skirt comes in two colours (black and white). It’s much shorter than anything I typically wear (its above knee-length on me, I’m 5’5) so it hides nicely under my swing skirts and dresses.

It’s a really comfortable item to wear and gives me a good shape for day outfits. It also keeps me cool during hot muggy Auckland days. It’s definitely my favourite buy as of late, and I only wish I had brought it sooner.

You can see in the image above that it clearly provides some extra shaping. This dress clearly isn’t a swing dress but it’s quite shapeless without the skirt which is what I wanted to show you. When I wear the canvas underskirt with a proper swing style… it really shows, and even more so with a heavier fabric skirt.

If you’re like me and have thought about buying this skirt for a while I would definitely just go for it. Price wise it’s affordable at $36.00 USD and it really is worthwhile grabbing one.

To finding that revolutionary pin-up item!

Thanks so much for blogging about this! I’ve been back and forth on getting a petticoat or the canvas underskirt and have been reading feedback to help get more info. I’m in the desert of Arizona so the underskirt definitely sounds like the best option. Only thing stopping me now is figuring out the right size. I have a 30 waist but usually get medium PUG dresses. The waist is a bit tight but not unbearable. I’m not sure if I should get the medium or large underskirt, for fear of one size being too tight and the other too loose. Given how the medium fits you, what are your thoughts?

Hey Hillory – Thanks so much for your comment! The stretchy waistband of the canvas underskirt is firm but has alot of give and the domes are quite strong. If you’re a 30″ waist I would definitely size up to the large because it covers the 29″-31″ range if it happens to be slightly looser than you prefer then you can clip the domes on and roll the waist band under. I hope that helps, and let me know if you have any further questions xxx

It’s been on my list as well…my waist is between the small and medium so been wary of going for it.

Have you measured your waist recently Ruby? I think I read a review on the actual PUG website about someone who was the same sizing as you, she sized up to an M but realised once she put it on that she probably could have fitted an S. I would measure yourself and double check the inches recommendation online 🙂

Ahhh I also have one of these – I have to say that mine has completely replaced my full pettis. It’s really surprising how much volume these give, especially with Jenny’s like you say. I work with primary school kids so I am often on the floor, wearing this means that I don’t get tangled up in my petti, totally suitable for everyday work use! I’m about 5’1 and don’t feel as ‘swallowed up’ in this as I sometimes do in a full petti too. xo

YES! Being swallowed up by fabric is exactly what I felt like sitting at my computer desk. In Summer its just too damn hot for petticoats… so this is a much cooler option without jeopardising my whole look. I’m glad you also have one and agree Luci 🙂
