I got chatting with the lovely Lauren from The Domestic Dame – a savvy, business woman in California who has a penchant for sassy boudoir aprons, retro styled sleepwear and cute dresses inspired by the 1950’s and 60’s.
With an extensive apron collection myself, I knew I couldn’t go past these sassy little numbers…
First of all, how did you become interested in designing garments with a retro twist?
I really can’t imagine doing it any other way. I’ve always been a huge fan of vintage style. I was completely obsessed with the 1960’s when I was a kid. Then, I was a punk rocker in high school and started making a lot of my own clothes. That somehow transitioned into the look I’m into now. I think my influence changes all the time but I’m forever pulling ideas from the past.
Who is your favourite pin-up girl of all time, and why?
Oh this is a good one! I don’t even know. I was very into Bettie Page in my teens. I love that she made a bunch of her own costumes. Currently, I’d have to say Audrey Hepburn and/or Brigitte Bardot. I know they fall more into the actress group but they both have such a unique look and personal style. I love them both. Plus Audrey was a humanitarian!
I absolutely adore your Sabrina dress, what inspired the use of all those gorgeous coloured stripes?
Thank you! I love all the colour in that fabric. I wanted something that was going to emphasize all the detail and style lines in the bodice while still looking really glamorous. I looked for fabric for that style for some time before I found that stripe. Then, of course, it was unavailable and I had to have it custom woven. It was worth it though! I’m so happy with how the Sabrina came out. I’m glad you like it too!
What is the biggest challenge of your job?
Finding balance! I absolutely adore what I do, but making time for other things is something that I have to make a conscious effort to do. Anyone that owns their own business knows that you never run out of projects, and there is never enough time in the day.
What’s the most popular item you have ever made/sold?
That would have to be our Boudoir apron. It was one of the first designs we ever launched (back in 2009) for The Domestic Dame and it’s been a fan favorite ever since.
After stalking your Instagram I fell in love with your cute apron designs, what do you think makes the ‘perfect apron’?
Why thank you! I think that all depends on what you’re looking for in an apron. Our cotton aprons are totally functional, you can splatter cake batter all over them, and they wash up really well and last for ages. Our organza aprons are great for hosting cocktail parties and double as lingerie. They’re definitely our most popular. I think the perfect apron serves its purpose (whatever that may be) and makes you feel glamorous… Oh and pockets.
What are your favourite shopping spots in Los Angeles?
Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank! It just keeps getting better and better. There are so many great boutiques and lots of great vintage. I definitely recommend it if you’re ever in the area.
Lastly, what is your favourite treat when you feel like spoiling your sweet tooth?
I love the salted oreo vegan ice cream from Scoops on Melrose! I also have zero self-control when it comes to Snickerdoodles. Oh and if there’s a place that makes vegan Tiramisu or Crème Brulee I need to know about it.
How cute is she? I’ve got my eye on her ‘Lily dress’ – I love gingham! Make sure you check out her website for cute 50’s and 60’s style dresses as well as some adorable sleepwear and bloomers… BLOOMERS PEOPLE!
Thanks so much for your time Lauren, I can’t wait to get some photos in my new boudoir apron
