Primus Hotel Sydney was an absolute dream to stay at, from the moment we walked into the grand hotel lobby and saw the pillars… we knew we had picked the right place.
The Art deco, 1930’s heritage building was restored and transformed into the beautiful Primus Hotel only last year in December, 2015. The venue was originally the Sydney water board headquarters.
As we were already staying in the hotel, I decided to check if they offered high tea and they did, (only since April 2016). I was starting to feel pretty excited about my first international high tea review.
There were three high tea options to choose from at the Lobby Bar. These are Executive Chef, Ryan Hong’s creations and we were able to say hello to him towards the end of our service. This was the first place I have ever been where there were three options:
- The Wilmot high tea (traditional high tea)
- The Zen high tea (exotic theme)
- G’n’T (marketed towards the gentlemen)
It took Jaimee and I some time to pick what we wanted and ended up going with the Zen high tea option. I ordered a Jasmine Green tea and Jaimee went with an Orchid Vanilla tea which smelt incredible. The tea infuser came out on its own little plate, and was the most delicate gold pyramid.
The manager, Nitin was the most helpful staff member throughout our high tea experience. I asked him if we could swap one item for some white chocolate and lemon scones and he said he would see what he could do.
He came back a few moments later with our scones and a big smile on his face and said “My grandfather always said the same thing – If a beautiful woman asks you to do something, just do it”, Jaimee and giggled at that!
I think my favourite sweet item would have been the kalamansi curd fruit tart which was an absolute flavour explosion. I felt like I needed a big glass of water afterwards but it was worth it!
My least favourite item on the menu was the mango and coconut sago. I’m not sure whether it was just because I was so full by the time I got to eat it, or the strong mango taste but it just wasn’t my favourite.
The Zen High Tea Menu
– Green tea and raspberry mousse cake
– Mango and coconut sago
– Kalamansi curd fruit tart
– Chocolate and jasmine delice
– Miso caramel fudge
– Peking duck pancake
– Pork bao
– Seafood salad on a wonton crisp
– Thai beef salad
– Steamed bun with pandan coconut custard
There are gluten-free options available if ordered in advance and the high tea service is available everyday between 3 and 5pm. Prices vary depending on what beverage you wish to have with your treats.
I would highly recommend this venue for anyone staying in Sydney who wants to spoil themselves. I know I will be back to not only stay at the Primus Hotel but to also try a different high tea.
