I did a photo shoot with Silver and Soul and Miss Rockabilly Ruby in May and I couldn’t be happier with the results.
Firstly, I really wanted to make the most of my limited time visiting Los Angeles. We spent so much of our holiday in the southern states and unfortunately didn’t leave much time for LA.
I started talking with Charles last year about organising a shoot together and originally I wasn’t sure what I wanted. I’ve been a fan of the work that Charles and Miss Rockabilly Ruby create, so I felt like whatever style I ended up picking would turn out great.
For this shoot, we did two separate looks. I wanted the main look and feel of my shoot to have that sweet housewife feel with a touch of darkness. It sums me up perfectly. Sweet treats and over the top cheesiness were always going to happen. I couldn’t go to LA and NOT do a shoot involving doughnuts. To me… doughnuts encompass American food. They’re also freaking delicious and we walked past Voodoo Doughnuts at Universal Studios. It was meant to be.
I wore a blue vintage dress I found at Hip Zipper in Nashville and chose a sleek pageboy hair style to go with it. My go-to hair style is longer and shorter versions of a pageboy so it felt good to have this done. Except this one was polished AF.
The second look was a crisp, clean style with a custom-made dress that I helped create myself. Well, by that I mean I found all the images and floral fabric style that I wanted and gave my ideas to a friend, Dariel Dearlove. She did the hard work. It’s really well fitted and has crisscross straps over the bust and collarbone. I love it so much and was so happy to not only shoot in this dress but have it as one of my Viva Las Vegas outfits as well.
Highlights of the shoot?
Trying to act natural while Ruby and Carl were throwing flour and confetti around me in puffs. Both of them were completely covered by the time we finished and it was both hilarious and very messy.
- I got the sweetest vintage pageboy ever, and I will forever be trying to recreate the same one
- We also ate the most delicious pizza in the world on the floor in between shoots and I loved it
- I got to hear the famous voice of Charles singing… in person.
The worst part of the shoot?
- Moose, their adorable dog farted on my lap… twice. Boy did it stink.
Both photo shoots were done at their house which is also their studio, and yes… I got to see Miss Rockabilly Ruby’s famous golden curtains in her makeup room.
These two were incredible to work with and I’m so happy I got to experience this time with them. Not only did I walk away feeling like we made something awesome happen, but I left with two new friends. I would highly recommend working with them if you ever get the chance – (which you might since they’re coming to New Zealand soon).
